Condition Overview
Spondylolysis is a stress fracture or defect in the thin section of bone called the pars interarticularis, typically in the lower back (lumbar region). It often occurs in younger athletes who participate in sports involving repetitive extension or twisting of the spine (e.g., gymnastics, football, or wrestling). This stress can weaken the vertebra, creating small cracks that may cause pain or lead to further instability.
Although some cases of spondylolysis remain mild and heal with rest, others can progress into spondylolisthesis, where the vertebra slips out of place. Recognizing the condition early can make a big difference in preventing long-term complications.
