Condition Overview
Scheuermann disease (also known as Scheuermann kyphosis) is a growth disorder often identified in adolescents, causing a noticeable roundness or “hunch” in the upper back. This occurs because the vertebrae become wedge-shaped during growth, rather than remaining rectangular. While typically seen in the thoracic spine, it can occasionally affect the lumbar region as well.
Symptoms may include back pain, fatigue, and visible changes in posture, especially during the teen years. If the curve is severe, the deformity can reduce lung capacity or cause lasting discomfort into adulthood.
