Condition Overview
Cervical discitis is an infection of the discs in the neck, typically caused by bacteria that enter the disc space through the bloodstream or after a surgical procedure. The inflamed discs can cause severe neck pain, fever, and difficulty moving the head or neck. Because the spine is a closed system, infections here can worsen quickly if not promptly treated.
In more serious cases, discitis can spread to nearby vertebrae (osteomyelitis) or even the spinal cord space (epidural abscess), creating a life-threatening situation. Proper diagnosis involves imaging studies and often blood tests or biopsy.
